Arkwright Scholarship
The Arkwright Scholarship is given to engineering students in the United Kingdom. The Arkwright Engineering Trust, part of a small piece trust, established the £12,000 scholarship, which is awarded annually.
What is Arkwright Scholarship?
In 1991, a group of tenured Headteachers concluded that the Design & Technology subject was underappreciated as a training ground for future engineers and technical designers.
They decided to launch an Engineering Scholarship Scheme to encourage high-ability students (ages 15 and 16) to pursue engineering careers through the study of design technologies.
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships program aims to inspire creative, talented young engineers. We want our students to be tomorrow’s leaders: captains of industry, team leaders, or academic researchers at the forefront of their fields.

Arkwright Engineering Scholarship Details
Arkwright Scholarship Eligibility criteria
To be eligible and meet the requirements for an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship,
- Your School/College must be partnered with Arkwright Scholarship.
- You must be a resident of the UK.
- You must be in year 11 (England plus Wales), S4 (Scotland), year 12 (Netherland), and about to take GCSEs, Scottish National 5s, IB Standards, or equivalent.
- Applicants should have a practical interest and ability in engineering. That can be shown by completing an appropriate project. They can also submit a personal project conducted either in classes or at home.
- Interested Applicants must have planned to take admission for A level in University.
- Applicants must be sure that their studies will lead to acceptance by their chosen University or Higher Degree Apprenticeship provider to study Engineering.
Therefore, unless looking for a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering, applicants must commit to learning at least one of the following subjects to A level (England, Wales & Northern Ireland), or Higher/Advanced Higher (Scotland):

The Selection Process for the Arkwright Scholarship Consists of five Stages:

Online Student Application for Arkwright Scholarship
Online Applications consist of seven Parts
About us: In this section, you will enter your personal information like Personal Details, Home Address, and current School details.
Future Studies: In this part, you will write about What subjects are you thinking of studying at either A-Level, BTEC Level 3, T-Level, International Baccalaureate, or Scottish Highers?
Beyond School / College: In this section, you select three types of engineering that you are interested in pursuing.
Detailed evidence of a STEM Project: In this section, you will provide your School/College Project.
Engineering Interests: Please provide details of any current or recent activities, hobbies, or projects that you have participated in which demonstrate your engineering interests.
Leadership and Ambition: In this part, you will write about your leadership skills. Write about your experience as a leader.
About your Parents/Guardians and Interview Venue Preferences: In this part, you will write about your parents and select interview venue preferences. The venue list is given below.

Student Aptitude Test (SAT) for Arkwright Scholarship
A written test is administered to assess your ability to solve a creative problem. The Student Aptitude Test will take 2 hours to complete.
The question paper will be divided into two sections, A and B. Section A consists of one Engineering problem for which you must provide three solutions.
Section B requires you to provide a single inventive and innovative clarification to a more focused engineering problem that has been thoroughly explained. Check last year’s paper.
20 min Interview
If you passed the Student Aptitude Test, the interview process will begin. Over 660 students were chosen for interviews.
During the interview, you will be asked about your project, which you have written about in your application. Look for an example of the Project.

10 things you need to know before applying for the Arkwright scholarship
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship application is pretty straightforward. There are a few things you need to know before applying, though.
Here are ten things that can help you save time, energy, and frustration as you go through the application process.
1. Enroll in a full-time college or university in the United States or Canada during the academic year. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Please note that all information will be verified by a staff member before final decisions are made regarding awards. Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding!
2. Have completed 30 hours (or more) of coursework toward their current degree program by June 1st.
This includes classes taken over summer breaks! We do not consider transfer credit or courses from another institution. If you are not sure if your class (es) will count towards your total, please contact us.
3. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of one of the following countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.
Students who are citizens of other countries must have attended high school in one of these countries for at least three years before graduating.
4. Do not have any prior college degrees If you already have an undergraduate degree, you may not apply for another undergraduate scholarship from Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
This includes 2-year degrees as well as associate’s degrees! If you do not meet these criteria, please do not apply as we cannot consider your application further.
5. Be enrolled in a program with a strong engineering focus (rather than computer science, business, or something else).
Students must major in one of these programs at their current institution by June 1st: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Chemical/Biomedical/Environmental Engineering.
6. Make plans to attend school full-time during the 2017–2018 school year.
It’s important that students can dedicate themselves fully to their studies while applying for our scholarship; therefore, applicants who plan on taking fewer than 12 credit hours per semester during the academic year are ineligible for consideration.
7. Be prepared to write a brief essay explaining why you deserve an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
- Essays should be 500 words or less and should be submitted with your application materials.
- Essays can discuss anything related to engineering, engineering education, or your career goals.
- We recommend that students take some time to think about what they want to say in their essays before starting them.
8. Have never received an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship before. If you have previously received an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, please do not apply as we cannot consider your application further.
9. Agree to continue enrolled in their current program for the remainder of the 2018-2019 academic year.
10. Show proof of admission to one of the following programs: computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or chemical/biomedical/environmental engineering.
