Awards will be given for studies in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, France (through Campus France), top United States of America (USA) universities, as well as federal universities and centers of excellence in Nigeria.
About PTDF Scholarship Program
The Federal Government’s Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has the responsibility of creating indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the demands of the oil and gas sector.
For the Undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. scholarships for students in Nigerian Federal Universities, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) invites applications from qualified Nigerians.
The selection of candidates for the PTDF Scholarship will be based on an equitable representation of the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT.
The program was created to give applicants the chance to take advantage of a diverse body of knowledge and the resources provided by top institutions around the world. In accordance with it, candidates are invited to apply via PTDF to particular programs at the partner institutions.
Selection Process
PTDF scholarships are highly competitive, and only candidates who excel in all areas are chosen. The best candidates in each category from each state will be chosen based on their qualifications and invited for an interview.
A selection committee will then be formed to evaluate applications using the following criteria:
- Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, and other professional qualifications acquired
- Relevant publications to be referenced by applicant (Ph.D. applicants only)
- Membership of professional bodies
- The viability of the study/research plan.
Shortlisted candidates for MSc students will have a computer-based test and Ph.D. students must have an oral Interview.

PTDF Scholarship 2022 Eligibility Criteria
- Overseas students must possess the following test
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)(USA)
- G.R.E (Graduate Record Examination) (USA)
- GMAT –for Management related courses (USA)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (UK).
PTDF Scholarship Requirements for MSc
- A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience
- Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
- Must be computer literate
- Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
- Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry, and its expected impact on national development.
- Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) before applying for the scholarship. Applicants are to note that they will be required to verify their NIN before proceeding with the application (NIMC verification charges apply).
PTDF Scholarship Requirements for PhD
- Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
- Must be computer literate
- A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good second-degree certificate
- A research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than five pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology, and mode of data collection
- All lecturers must produce a letter from their Vice Chancellor confirming that they are not in receipt of any other scholarships
- Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) before applying for the scholarship. Applicants are to note that they will be required to verify their NIN before proceeding with the application (NIMC verification charges apply).
Required Documents
Applicants are advised to scan copies of the following documents and attach them to their online application forms:
- First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
- NYSC discharge certificate
- WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results and the PINs on the application forms to enable PTDF to view the O’level results on the relevant website.
- 2 Recent Passport Photograph
- Local Government Identification Letter
- Master’s Degree Certificate (Ph.D. Applicants only)
- Evidence of membership of professional associations.
Age Limit
Applicant age limit should not be above 30 years for MSc and 40 years for Ph.D.
2022 Requirements for Undergraduate and Postgraduate
- Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and will be required to verify their NIN via the portal before proceeding with the application (NIMC verification charges apply).
- Applicants who have benefitted from any of the PTDF scholarships in the past cannot apply for the same or lower category of degree.
- Applicants who are beneficiaries of any other scholarship need not apply.
- Application is restricted to Federal Universities and for specific courses only.
- A valid admission letter to the University is mandatory for all applicants.
- Admission letters for Postgraduate studies should be within a validity period of 12 months (2019/2020 or 2020/2021 session).
- Postgraduate applicants who meet the requirements shall be shortlisted for interviews before the final selection of successful candidates.
- Undergraduate applicants must have completed their first year and are currently in their second year of studies.
- Only undergraduate applicants undertaking studies in oil and gas-related fields (as advertised) will be considered and the final selection shall be based on grades on their transcripts (transcripts must be signed and stamped by HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff).
- Admission for part-time studies shall not be considered for all categories of applications.
- The scholarship is highly competitive, and merit driven. The selection of candidates shall be based on equitable representation of the 36 States of the Federation and FCT.
PTDF Requirements for in Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS)
- A selection panel will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria.
- Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired and relevant publications to be referenced by applicants.
- Membership of professional bodies.
- The viability of the study/research plan (Ph.D. applicants only) Undergraduate and Postgraduate (MSC) applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose stating the reason(s) they wish to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and its expected impact on national development.
- While Ph.D. applicants are required to submit a research proposal of not more than 6 pages to include the topic, introduction, literature review, research question(s), novelty, methodology, mode of data collection(s), expected outcome (s), relevance to the industry and appropriate references.
