Purpose

The Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) program promotes excellence in graduate education at Ontario’s publicly supported universities. The OGS program has been awarding merit-based scholarships to Ontario’s top graduate students across all academic fields since 1975.

The University of Toronto and the Province of Ontario jointly support the scholarship program at U of T. Universities get Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) awards from the Province, with the number of awards each institution is allowed to give its students each year clearly stated.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship Value

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is worth $5,000 per session. As a result, recipients are eligible to win $10,000 for two consecutive sessions or $15,000 for three consecutive sessions. In every case, the awarding graduate unit will pay for a third of the total prize that the students get.

Academic Requirements

The following academic requirements must be met by applicants in order to be eligible for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship:

• Hold an A– Average (Ontario equivalent of 80%) in both the years of full-time study before being awarded the scholarship.
• International applicants must be proficient in English by the time of application.
• Applicant must be registered full-time in a graduate degree program, that is,
  • 60% or more of a full course load as defined by the university
  • 40% or more for students with disabilities.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program Eligibility Criteria

Interested graduate students can pursue their Master’s and doctoral degrees with the help of the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. The following Ontario Graduate Scholarship program eligibility requirements must be met by applicants:

• Both domestic and international students are eligible for the scholarship.
• The domestic applicant should be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada at the time of the scholarship application.
• The international applicant should be pursuing studies in an Ontario university with a valid Canadian study permit.
• The students protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (subsection 95[2]) are also eligible to apply for the scholarship.
• The applicant should hold an A-Average or the Ontario equivalent of 80% marks in both the years of full-time study before being awarded the scholarship.
• The international candidates should be proficient in English by the time of the scholarship application.
• The applicant should be registered in a full-time graduate degree program with at least 60% of the full course load (40% for students with disabilities) as defined by the university.
• The students pursuing a Master’s degree can avail of the scholarship for a maximum of 2 years.
• Doctoral students can avail of the scholarship for 4 years.
• The lifetime maximum restriction for a Government-funded scholarship is 6 years for any candidate.
• The applicant cannot avail of benefits from 2 government-funded scholarships concurrently.

OGS Rewards and Benefits

The benefits offered by the Ontario Graduate Scholarship vary based on the respective universities where the candidate is pursuing studies. The details of the benefits offered by the scholarship are given below:

1. The top universities such as Ryerson University, University of Toronto, Lakehead University, etc combine their scholarship funds with the Government to provide financial assistance to domestic and international students.
2. The selected candidates receive a scholarship amount of USD 5000 per term.
3. The majority of the scholarship awards are awarded for 3 terms(amounting to USD 15,000) but can also be awarded for a minimum of 2 terms(scholarship value of USD 10,000)
4. One-term scholarship awards are not granted.
5. The duration for which the scholarship is awarded is decided by the awarding university and is based on the applicant’s academic performance.
